Can AI Help With Forever Regulations?

Last year, in 2023, the federal government produced 90,402 pages of new regulations and their explanations in the Federal Register—the second highest total of all time. In those pages, they describe 3,018 regulations (in 2021 it was 4,429). Within each regulation there are often numerous commands so that the total requirements (specific commands to do something) are probably 10 times that many, or about 30,000 brand new industry requirements last year.  All of these requirements are compiled in the Code of Federal Regulations, the Code (now standing at over 90,000 pages). The regulatory requirements in the code are “forever,” like the description of PFAS chemicals. Will the Code continue to swell until the economy shuts down or, like so many other things, can AI solve the problem?
