Does Watching Sports Lead to Disease?
Does watching commercials for unhealthy foods on sports shows cause disease?
According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences:
Obesity is a chronic disease that affects millions of adults, adolescents, and children in the United States. Obesity results from a combination of genetic susceptibility, biological pathways related to metabolism and body weight regulation, and environmental factors. Although obesity is often attributed to poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity, the truth is more complicated.”
What is not complicated is that in 1981, average calorie consumption was 2,880 calories per day when it began to surge. By 2013 it was 3,600, a 24% increase. Today, it is about 3,800, the second highest number of all countries. To lose weight the Mayo Clinic recommends a max of 1,500 calories for women, 1,800 calories for men. Men typically need about 2,500 calories and women 2,000 calories per day. Between men and women, we are consuming nearly 70% more calories than we should. Overweight and obese people are obviously consuming many, many more calories than we should. Different groups report different numbers but the problem is still there.
